Feature Request: Configurable Data Directory and Account Backup/Restore
Summary
I would like to propose two related improvements that would significantly improve data safety and the long-term user experience.
1. Allow users to choose a custom data storage location
Currently, EpixNet stores its data on the operating system partition by default. This is not ideal for long-term storage because the system partition is often reformatted during OS reinstalls, resulting in the loss of all locally stored data.
For users who actively use the application, the data directory can grow to several gigabytes over time. Creating manual backups by copying this directory can also become time-consuming.
It would be very helpful if users could select a custom storage location (for example, another internal drive or a dedicated data partition) where EpixNet stores its files. This would:
- Reduce the risk of accidental data loss after reinstalling the operating system.
- Make long-term storage more reliable.
- Allow users to keep large datasets on a partition intended for persistent data.
- Simplify backup strategies.
2. Account Backup and Restore Wizard
It would also be valuable to provide a built-in Account Backup and Restore feature.
The backup process could:
- Clearly remind users to securely save their seed phrase.
- Explain that the seed phrase alone may not be sufficient depending on the account configuration.
- Identify which files inside the
Private directory contain important private keys or other account-related data.
- Allow users to export all necessary account data into a single backup package.
- Provide a corresponding restore process that helps users recover their accounts after reinstalling the operating system or moving to a new computer.
Many users may not know exactly which files need to be backed up in addition to the seed phrase. A guided backup and restore workflow would reduce the risk of permanently losing access to their accounts.
Benefits
- Better long-term data safety.
- Reduced risk of account loss.
- Easier migration to a new computer.
- Simpler backups for users with large amounts of stored data.
- Improved overall user experience.
