Summary

Provide users with a way to crop images using template shapes inside frames (artboards) so that images automatically fit within predefined template areas.

Video

Basic example

  1. User opens a moodboard with a template applied to a frame.
  2. The template contains predefined shapes (placeholders/boxes).
  3. User places an image on top of one of these template boxes.
  4. The template shape is visible underneath the image.
  5. User presses Ctrl + 7.

Result:

  • A clipping mask is applied.
  • The image is cropped to the exact shape/area of the template box.
  • Only the portion of the image inside the template shape remains visible.

Motivation

Users working with templates need a fast and precise way to fit images into predefined layouts.

Current situation:

  • The template shape is visible behind the image but not functionally usable.
  • There is no direct way to use that shape as a clipping area.

User need:

  • Use template shapes as masks to crop images quickly.
  • Avoid manual resizing and positioning.
  • Maintain consistency across layouts and artboards.

Expected outcome:

  • Users can place images over template placeholders and convert them into cropped compositions with a single action (Ctrl + 7).
  • Faster workflow when working with structured templates.
  • Improved precision and consistency in layout design.
