Additional context

I requested assistance from Chat GPT and the relevant portions of that dialogue are attached. In summary: 'The application includes the required library, but its bundled copy is incompatible with the current macOS dynamic loader because it has malformed or duplicated LC_RPATH load commands. Since both GRASS 8.4 and 8.5 contain the problem, reinstalling either version is unlikely to help unless a newly repackaged build has been issued.' I have not attempted the repair suggested by Chat GPT but it may be useful information for anyone resolving this bug.

As a follow up, v.surf.bspline suffers the identical problem. v.surf.rst opens as expected on an older mac using 11.7.11. GRASS 7.8 fails to open on 26.5.2 with errors that are similar to v.surf.rst relating to libgfortran.5.dylib and failure to open the gui. Haven't had chance to check the suggested link in the error message ........

Now I understand. The GRASS app was built against version 11 for wider support. I suppose the reason it works for me is that I have the MacOSX11.sdk installed in /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/SDKs. In case you have Apple's Command Line Tools installed, a quick (temporary) fix may be if you install it (using an SDK from https://github.com/phracker/MacOSX-SDKs/releases, which is what they use at conda-forge).

The problem originates from the conda distribution of libgfortran5, I'll see if a newer version fixes this. Either way, the GRASS app needs to be repackaged.
