I believe currently the only way to freely place new cursors it via Alt+click. And sometimes it's faster to just do that than to select a wide range and devise a regex to select what I want.

Given how goto_word is convenient to move around with only the keyboard, I was thinking it would make sense to have a variant that, instead of moving, adds a new cursor at the selected word.
