[Bug bounty] monk.install.run fails 9 in a row with the same 'Monk CLI and daemon need to be installed.' string — same string across 4 workspace contexts, no diagnostic context #485

Description

@NyxSpecter4

Summary

9 install.run attempts across 2026-08-29 to 2026-08-31 all return identical error; one (997ca289) actually shows a different MANIFEST-load failure but bundled under the same error code.

Stage

install

Repro steps

  1. Sign in to Monk as github|236979482 in Cursor
  2. Issue monk.install.run nine times across four workspaceRoots
  3. Read ~/.monk/agent/store/global/actions/items.json

Expected

The error string carries diagnostic structure — at minimum a category, the actual reason (missing package, missing apt repo, missing WSL distro, missing monkd binary on PATH), and a one-line next-action hint.

Actual

  • Every action id from 685c7aef to 6154aa28 has identical error text; one (997ca289) returned a MANIFEST socket failure that surfaced as truncated MANIFEST-load error inside the same install.run error code.

Setup

Windows 11, Cursor with Monk coding-agent plugin v0.1.58, account github|236979482.
