# Summer School

The summer school (sometimes called Smallpeice) is an annual Summer School that we (usually, 2025 notwithstanding) hold in collaboration with the [Smallpeice Trust](https://www.smallpeicetrust.org.uk/). During this weeklong event, normally held in early August, SRO are responsible for the event. Staff from the Smallpeice trust ensure the welfare of students outside of the working day.

In 2025, the event was non-residential and funding and support was provided by the [School of Electronics and Computer Science](https://ecs.soton.ac.uk/).

# Access and ID Cards

:::info
Since the content below was written, B32 has been renovated and our cupboards there no longer exists. The contents of the B32 cupboards is now in the temporary(?) SROffice (room 02/5014).

Out of working hours, special card access is required to enter B2. A key is required to unlock the SROffice.
:::

---

We work mainly in the evenings, and building 32 (where we mainly work) reverts to card access only outside working hours. All ECS members are able to gain access through the main entrance doors until 11pm. No interior doors, however, are accessible unless the cardholder is staff or a PGR in ECS.

It is usually possible to get the ID cards of the committee programmed so they can access readers in the "All ECS Readers (B32)" reader group. Note that the room 32/4073 is not included in this group and must be added separately.

No public right of access exists within university buildings, including B53 and B32. If you are external to the university and helping us with an event, please try to avoid moving alone around these buildings. Do not try to gain access to locked buildings unless you are in possession of your own valid university ID card which grants access, or in exceptional circumstances, a generic "Door Entry" card which grants access (issued usually for certain events).

## Building 2

The SROffice is room 02/5014. It contains the contents of our late B32 cupboards.

Renovations in B32 mean these spaces no longer exist. For now, see B2.

32/4073 is the Mary-Campbell room. We used it for meetings towards the end of 24/25 when B32 renovations began and the room on L3 became unavailable.

Any member of the Students' Union (full or associate) may join the society. Membership is entirely free and lasts for the entire academic year. Joining the society proper is important, as you're covered by the group insurance policy held by the Students' Union, can submit reimbursement claims against the society, will receive (infrequent but usually important) emails from the society, and (arguably most importantly!) prove to the Students' Union that we are worth keeping affiliated!

Joining the society is done via the [SUSU group page for SRO](https://susu.org/student-robotics-southampton).

Only one type of membership is available and this grants equal privileges to the holder to any other member - regardless of whether the member is a student (full SU member) or staff/alumni (associate SU member). The only exception is that only full members (current students) may run for a position on the committee.
