[UI/UX] Allow users to define and order shelves #3548

Description

@jondycz

Currently, the only way to display games on the home screen is by toggling a couple of pre-defined options in the interface settings.

I suggest all the following to be removed in favor of collection and virtual collection based shelves.

System collections will include:

  • recently added
  • continue playing
  • platforms (dos, flash)
  • specific platform collections (dos->age of war, age of war 2...)
  • favorites

User defined:

  • specific collections

This brings several improvements:

  1. instead of displaying a shelve of platforms, each platform could act as a shelf. Reducing the need to first click on a platform and then select a game to play. I personally don't care of the platform, I just want to find my games fast. So I could say I want DOS games on the first shelf, flash games on the second.
  2. as hinted above, this would allow for shelf sorting. Prefer displaying flash games first and dos games second? No problem.
  3. simplicity for user expectations - since steam uses the very same principle, it will be easy for users to navigate and set up.

Perhaps also a way to define system defaults for new accounts.

Here's some quick sketch by chatgpt. Instead of "my custom shelves" the item would just say collections and when clicked would open list of all the collections. Selected collections will be added as shelves to the home screen. Same behavior for the platforms. Meaning users who want can still add shelves that display "folders" of platforms, but enables other users who dislike the nested nature of it to directly display a specific platform as a shelf.
