rptengine binary locally compiled says its version is "undefined"

When running rtpengine --version I expect to get something like this line:

Version: mr13.5.1.6

Unexpected behaviour you saw

When running rtpengine --version I'm getting this line:

Version: undefined

• Download a tagged version (e.g mr13.5.1.6) of sipwise/rtpengine from GitHub.
• Locally compile and install it following the corresponding documentation.
• Run the command rtpengine --version

Do you have git available when compiling?

Did you download as a git clone or from a tarball?

Yes, git command is available when compiling.

I downloaded it from a tarball, which is preferred for my use case, even when git is installed.

For completeness, a few minutes ago I tried from a directory resulting from a git clone, then switching to branch mr13.5.1, observing that the resulting binary works OK, for example:

# On Ubuntu 24.04
rtpengine --version
Version: git-mr13.5.1-81efbb17

# On Rocky 8
rtpengine --version
Version: git-mr13.5.1-81efbb17

In both cases (either from tarball or from git clone) the executed compilation commands are the same, like these:

cd /tmp/from-tarball/ # or cd /tmp/from-git-clone-switched-to-proper-branch
cd daemon
make
cp rtpengine /usr/sbin/rtpengine
chmod 755 /usr/sbin/rtpengine
cd ..
cd kernel-module
make
cp xt_RTPENGINE.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/updates/xt_RTPENGINE.ko
chmod 640 /lib/modules/`uname -r`/updates/xt_RTPENGINE.ko
/usr/sbin/rtpengine --version
