Fixes #290

What does this PR fix?

This PR fixes DigiCert timestamp verification on Windows.

The current system_ca() implementation only checks CA bundle paths used on Linux and macOS. On Windows, these paths are not available, causing system_ca() to return None and verification to stop with the following error:

no system CA bundle found for the DigiCert timestamp

As a result, valid DigiCert timestamps cannot be verified through the normal verification process on Windows.

What changed?

  • Added certifi as a runtime dependency.
  • Updated system_ca() to use existing system CA bundle paths when available.
  • Added a certifi fallback for environments where standard system CA bundle paths are unavailable.
  • Added a regression test to validate the fallback behavior.
  • Updated docs/verify.md with Windows verification instructions, Git Bash requirements, and cross-platform checksum commands.

Verification and Testing

The Windows-specific issue was reproduced using the published AOSSIE evidence release. The implementation was updated to provide a fallback CA bundle through certifi when standard system CA bundle paths are unavailable.

The fix was validated through automated testing and regression coverage.

Validation results:

  • All 76 tests passed (pytest tests -q).
  • The CA-bundle fallback regression test passed.
  • git diff --check completed successfully.

The changes preserve existing system CA bundle discovery while providing a fallback for environments where standard CA bundle paths are unavailable.

This pull request is specifically scoped to improving cross-platform CA bundle discovery for DigiCert timestamp verification.

Walkthrough

The verifier now falls back to the certifi CA bundle when none of its configured system CA paths exists. The pull request adds a test for that fallback and updates release verification instructions for Windows, timestamp checks, and hash utilities.

Changes

CA bundle fallback

Layer / File(s) Summary
certifi fallback
pyproject.toml, simple/stamp.py, tests/simple/test_ovl_anchor.py
The project adds certifi as a dependency. system_ca() returns the first matching configured CA path or the path from certifi.where(). A test checks the fallback.
Verification guidance
docs/verify.md
The instructions add Windows prerequisites and Git Bash guidance, describe timestamp checks and the certifi fallback, and support sha256sum or gsha256sum for hash verification.

Following the verification guide in a fresh environment can fail at startup because certifi is not installed. Add certifi to the install command before merging. The remaining CA-bundle description is a small documentation inconsistency.

Explanation

Issue #290 requires DigiCert timestamp verification to locate a valid CA bundle on supported Windows environments. simple/stamp.py now checks the existing system bundle paths and falls back to certifi.where() when no path is available. certifi is a runtime dependency. SystemCaTests.test_falls_back_to_certifi_when_system_bundle_is_missing covers the fallback behavior. These changes satisfy the linked coding requirement.

Explanation

The reviewed whole-PR summary contains the runtime dependency, system_ca() fallback, regression test, and Windows verification documentation. The focused whole-PR diffs for simple/ovl.py and tests/simple/test_ovl.py are empty, so the unrelated changes identified in the previous assessment are not present at the reviewed head. The current changes remain within issue #290 scope.

On Windows, install Python 3.12 or newer, Git for Windows, and ensure OpenSSL is available. The verifier uses the `certifi` CA bundle when the platform does not provide one of the standard system CA-bundle paths.

From PowerShell, download `release/simple-run/` and run the same verification command shown below. If OpenSSL is installed with Git for Windows but is not on `PATH`, add the Git OpenSSL directory to `PATH` for the current PowerShell session:

Provide PowerShell commands for the Windows flow.

Line 27 directs PowerShell users to run the Bash block below. That block uses the POSIX assignment OVL_DEVICE=cpu python ..., which PowerShell does not treat as an environment-variable assignment. Verification fails before ovl.py starts.

Either instruct users to run the block in Git Bash, or provide PowerShell syntax:

$env:OVL_DEVICE = "cpu"
python ovl-code/simple/ovl.py verify --run . --weights conversation-model.pt

Update the PowerShell instructions in the verification section so users can run
the command as written: either direct them to run the existing POSIX command in
Git Bash, or provide PowerShell-compatible environment-variable assignment and
verification commands. Keep the Windows flow consistent with the OpenSSL PATH
guidance.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Use a portable Git for Windows OpenSSL path.

The fallback adds only /mingw64/bin. Git for Windows v2.56.0 changed the x64 layout to /ucrt64, so this command does not cover current installations that use the newer layout. If OpenSSL is not already on PATH, verification can still fail with openssl not found. Detect the actual openssl.exe directory or document both supported layouts. (github.com)
