Description

Resolves two file upload issues reported in #458:

  1. UTF-8 filename corruption: Uploaded files with non-ASCII characters (accents, CJK, emoji, etc.) had their filenames corrupted into garbled Latin-1 (e.g. résumé.pdf → résumé.pdf, 照片.jpg → ç…§çH‡.jpg).
  2. Silent file overwrite: Uploading a file with a name that already existed in ReinShared silently overwrote the original file without warning.

Root Cause

  • Bug A: In parseMultipart(), the body was read as a binary string (body.toString("binary")) to calculate byte boundaries. Extracting filename="..." from this Latin-1 string split multi-byte UTF-8 sequences into separate single-byte characters.
  • Bug B: handleFileUpload() used fs.promises.writeFile(filePath, data) with the default flag: "w", which truncates and overwrites existing destination files.

Key Changes

  • UTF-8 header decoding: Extracted parseFirstPartHeaders(body, boundary) as a pure function. Boundary/offset matching remains on the binary representation for byte-accurate indexing, but header byte slices are re-decoded to UTF-8 (Buffer.from(slice, "binary").toString("utf8")).
  • RFC 5987 support: Added priority parsing for filename*=UTF-8''<encoded> headers per RFC 6266 §4.3.
  • Collision-safe saving: Added writeFileExclusive(uploadDir, baseName, data) using flag: "wx" (O_EXCL). On EEXIST, it atomically retries with stem (N).ext (e.g., image (1).jpg, image (2).jpg) up to 999 attempts, preserving the original file.
  • Sanitization & bounds: Stripped ASCII control codes (\u0000-\u001f\u007f) and separators after path.basename(), and truncated filenames to 255 UTF-8 bytes to respect filesystem boundaries.
  • Payload integrity: Slices data buffers directly by byte offset; binary payload contents are never passed through string conversions.

Testing

Added comprehensive unit tests in src/server/signalling/handlers/fileShare.test.ts:

  • Preserves ASCII, accented (résumé.pdf), CJK (照片.jpg), and emoji (🎉party.jpg) filenames.
  • RFC 5987 filename* handling and priority over plain filename=.
  • Binary content byte-level integrity verification.
  • Sequential upload collision renaming: file.pdf → file (1).pdf → file (2).pdf.
  • Concurrent upload collision safety via Promise.all (all payloads preserved).
  • Dotfiles (.gitignore), extensionless files, and multi-extension files (archive.tar.gz).
  • Path traversal attempts (../, ../../, /etc/passwd, Windows ..\\).
  • Control characters and null byte replacement.
  • Non-collision I/O error propagation (e.g. non-existent directories).

Test suite execution:

  • npm run test: Passed (6/6 test files, 51/51 tests passing).
  • npm run check: Passed (Biome clean, exit code 0).

Checklist

  • Code follows style guidelines (npm run check)
  • Self-review completed
  • Tests added/updated (npm run test)
  • No breaking API changes or unnecessary dependencies added

Fixes AOSSIE-Org#458

## Root cause

### Bug A — UTF-8 filename corruption
parseMultipart() called body.toString("binary"), which maps each byte
1:1 to a Latin-1 codepoint. This correctly preserves byte offsets for
boundary searching, but the extracted filename= value was left as a
Latin-1 string. Multi-byte UTF-8 sequences were silently split into
individual codepoints, so "é" (bytes 0xC3 0xA9) became two characters
"é", corrupting every non-ASCII filename:

  résumé.pdf → résumé.pdf
  照片.jpg → ç…§çH‡.jpg

### Bug B — Silent file overwrite
fs.promises.writeFile(filePath, data) uses flag "w" (create-or-truncate)
by default. Uploading image.jpg twice discarded the first file entirely.

## Changes

### src/server/signalling/handlers/fileShare.ts

Extract parseFirstPartHeaders(body, boundary) — a pure, exported function
that centralises all multipart header parsing logic:

- Keeps boundary/offset searching in the binary (Latin-1) string domain
  so Buffer indices remain exact.
- Re-decodes only the header byte range as UTF-8 via
    Buffer.from(binarySlice, "binary").toString("utf8")
eliminating the Latin-1 corruption without touching file data bytes.
- Adds priority support for RFC 5987 filename*=UTF-8''<percent-encoded>
(per RFC 6266 §4.3) before the plain filename= fallback.
- Returns dataStart/dataEnd indices so parseMultipart() slices the file
content directly from the original Buffer — binary content is never
  re-encoded.

Add writeFileExclusive(uploadDir, baseName, data) — atomic, race-safe
file saving:

- Uses flag "wx" (O_EXCL) so the OS guarantees exclusivity; no TOCTOU
  window between checking and writing.
- On EEXIST, generates "stem (N).ext" candidates (N = 1…999) until a
  free slot is found.
- Propagates all non-EEXIST errors (permissions, full disk, etc.)
  immediately without swallowing them.
- Returns the actual filename used so callers can store/broadcast the
  correct name.

Strengthen filename sanitization in handleFileUpload():

- Replace control characters U+0000–U+001F and U+007F (including null
bytes) and stray / or \ with "_" after path.basename() has already
  removed directory components.
- Truncate to 255 UTF-8 bytes (filesystem limit on most platforms).

Update handleFileUpload() to use savedName (returned by
writeFileExclusive) consistently in the SharedFile object, the SSE
broadcastFileEvent payload, and the JSON response.

### src/server/signalling/handlers/fileShare.test.ts (new)

38 Vitest unit tests covering:

parseFirstPartHeaders
  - ASCII, accented Latin (résumé.pdf), CJK (照片.jpg), emoji (🎉party.jpg)
  - RFC 5987 filename*=UTF-8'' parsing and priority over plain filename=
  - Fallback to "file" when no filename present
  - Correct Content-Type extraction and octet-stream default
  - Binary content byte-level integrity (including 0xC3 0xA9 bytes)
  - Throws on missing boundary / missing blank-line separator

writeFileExclusive
  - First upload → exact name
  - Second upload → "stem (1).ext" (regression for Bug B)
  - Third upload → "stem (2).ext"
  - Original file content never overwritten
  - 5 concurrent uploads via Promise.all — all 5 files preserved, all
    names unique
  - Non-EEXIST errors propagated (write to non-existent directory)
  - Extensionless: notes → notes (1)
  - Dotfile: .gitignore → .gitignore (1)
  - Double extension: archive.tar.gz → archive.tar (1).gz

Sanitization logic (mirrors handleFileUpload inline transforms)
  - ../secret.txt → secret.txt
  - ../../outside.txt → outside.txt
  - /etc/passwd → passwd
  - Windows ..\secret.txt → secret.txt
  - \x00evil.txt → _evil.txt
  - \x1ftest.txt → _test.txt
  - 300-char name truncated to ≤ 255 bytes
  - résumé.pdf unchanged after sanitization (no secondary corruption)

## Test results

  Test Files 5 passed (5)
       Tests 48 passed (48) ← 38 new + 10 pre-existing
    Duration 747ms

npm run check → exit 0 (Biome)

## Notes

- No new npm dependencies.
- No changes to auth, networking, WebRTC, or any other module.
- Browser/iOS end-to-end testing requires a physical device (not
performed in this automated session); manual verification recommended
  per ISSUE_458_IMPLEMENTATION_REPORT.md.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 8af7f

This change adds a cross-platform input package and a screen-share consent step. Several defects should be fixed before merge: logging can throw on some values, the consent controls can be unreachable on short screens, Linux touch axes are misconfigured, a malformed key combo can leave a modifier key stuck, and macOS fallback text input fails in the ESM build.

decodeURIComponent(nameStar[1].trim()) needs a try/catch guard here. If a client sends an invalid percent sequence (like a broken %80 or dangling %), decodeURIComponent throws an uncaught URIError synchronously and crashes the upload handler instead of falling back to namePlain or "file".
