2026-10-08 Green Software Principles & Patterns #435
The GSF Patterns workstream met to review progress on the Patterns Catalogue and the green coding skill, and to discuss the recent launch of the GSF Academy. The group discussed how to improve the catalogue's cost impact guidance, agreed next steps for pattern consolidation, and confirmed a move to a single consistent meeting time going forward.
Key Discussions
GSF Academy: Officially launched the previous week, offering 14 courses across role tracks from engineers to executives, each covering carbon, energy, water, and cost impact areas. Member organisations are invited to join a pilot cohort through the end of the year.
Green coding skill: Interest continues to grow, with AVEVA and Schneider Electric actively piloting internal adoption, and IBM and NTT DATA exploring early use. The group discussed how to help organisations move from individual discovery to shared learning, and the enterprise-scale challenge of applying coding skills selectively rather than everywhere.
Patterns Catalogue: Low-quality patterns have been archived, and consolidation of duplicate Operations-category patterns is underway via three open pull requests. The group discussed how to improve the catalogue's cost impact sections so they clearly communicate trade-offs rather than one-sided savings claims, and explored broadening the concept to a wider "impact" section covering non-cost benefits.
Key Decisions
Move to a single consistent recurring meeting time
Continue archiving and consolidating low-quality and duplicate patterns
Cost impact sections will be reworked to show both cost increases and decreases, plus trade-offs
Explore broadening cost impact into a more general impact section covering additional benefits
Next Meeting
Restructuring proposal for the edge inference pattern
