fix: stop backfilling Harbor usage from ATIF - #461
Conversation
Harbor's complete accounting fields (n_input_tokens, n_cache_tokens, n_output_tokens, cost_usd) now come only from NeMo Fabric's normalized usage. When a result exists, every dimension is assigned from that usage, so an unknown dimension clears a value an earlier pass left behind and a reported zero stays zero. When the runner exits without a result, the bridge leaves the fields unset. ATIF final_metrics can cover a different scope (subagents) and a different cache convention than the invocation, so filling unknown fields from them presented unverified totals as complete. They are now kept under metadata.fabric.atif_final_metrics with source "atif" and coverage "unverified". Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>
The Harbor integration and Claude adapter READMEs said a trajectory fills the counts a result leaves unknown. State the current contract: unknown counts stay unknown, zeros stay zero, and ATIF totals are kept separately in Fabric metadata. Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>
populate_context_from_result replaced metadata["fabric"] wholesale, so a result or runner-failure pass that ran after the trajectory pass deleted atif_final_metrics and harbor_atif_validation. Replace only the result fields of the current pass and keep the bridge's ATIF evidence. Result identities and runner_error from an earlier pass are still dropped. Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>
When the runner wrote no result, or wrote a runner_error record, the bridge left the four accounting fields as it found them. Harbor only passes an empty context, but a caller with a populated context kept values no Fabric result supports. Clear them on both paths so the outcome does not depend on the context the helper receives. Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>
The bridge now sets the four accounting fields to None when no Fabric result exists, rather than leaving them as it found them. Match the Harbor integration README to that behavior. Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>
telemetry_validation is evidence the bridge records beside the result, like the ATIF records. A result or runner-failure pass that ran after the telemetry summary still deleted it. Add it to the keys that _replace_result_metadata keeps. Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>

WalkthroughHarbor accounting now uses Fabric usage values without backfilling unknown fields from ATIF metrics. Missing or failed results clear accounting values. ATIF final metrics remain separate, unverified metadata. ChangesHarbor accounting semantics

Harbor aggregates skip unknown values, so displayed totals may be partial. Remove the comment that calls Fabric usage complete and document the reporting limitation. Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>

agent-generated: Optional documentation improvement: Please copy the PR description’s warning about incomplete Harbor aggregates into the Harbor integration README. Harbor totals skip unknown values, so displayed totals may understate overall usage or cost. Keeping this caveat in the README would help users interpret benchmark reports correctly. |

Thanks, I’ve already added that caveat to the Harbor integration README: Harbor totals skip unknown values, so reported usage or cost may be incomplete. |

Overview
When a NeMo Fabric result leaves a Harbor accounting field unknown, the Harbor bridge fills it from the ATIF trajectory's
final_metrics. Those totals are a different measurement. Relay can preserve subagent usage in embedded child trajectories, but the root trajectory totals exclude those children and can be partial. A Relay trajectory can also cover different calls than the adapter's invocation, and nothing checks its cache convention against the result. One run could show input from Fabric and cost from ATIF, presented together as one complete invocation total. This PR makes
RunResult.usagethe only source forn_input_tokens,n_cache_tokens,n_output_tokensandcost_usd.Details
None, even when an earlier pass left a value in the context. Reported zeros stay zero, andusage: nullleaves all four unknown.None.final_metricsare kept undermetadata.fabric.atif_final_metricswithsource: "atif"andcoverage: "unverified". That record, the Harbor ATIF validation and the telemetry validation are bridge-owned: a later result or runner-failure pass replaces only result-owned fields, so they survive in any pass order while stale result identities andrunner_errorfields are removed.Compatibility: Harbor no longer fills unknown Fabric usage or cost fields from unverified ATIF totals. Reports can therefore show unknown values where earlier versions displayed a number. The ATIF values remain available separately, but are not presented as complete invocation totals. Reported zeros remain zero.
Reporting limitation: Native Harbor trial and job totals sum available values and skip unknown fields. A displayed total can therefore omit usage or cost from steps or trials with unknown values. Do not interpret these aggregates as complete benchmark usage or expenditure when any contributing value is unknown.
