Upgrades the 6.1 branch to Node.js 24.x and npm 11.x. Also:

  • Runs Grunt with --no-maglev --no-concurrent-sparkplug, as r63771 does on trunk, to avoid hangs at exit on Node.js 24.
  • Regenerates package-lock.json with npm 11, whose npm ci rewrites the npm 6 lockfile, and sets legacy-peer-deps = true in .npmrc so npm 11 resolves peer dependencies as npm 6 did. No package versions change.
  • Removes engine-strict = true from .npmrc. With it, npm 11 refuses to install the lint dependencies eslint-plugin-jsdoc 39.9.1 and @es-joy/jsdoccomment 0.36.1, whose engines exclude Node.js 24.

Run Grunt with `--no-maglev --no-concurrent-sparkplug`, as r63771 does on trunk, to avoid hangs at exit on Node.js 24.
Remove `engine-strict = true` from `.npmrc`, because npm 11 then refuses to install `eslint-plugin-jsdoc` 39.9.1 and `@es-joy/jsdoccomment` 0.36.1, whose `engines` exclude Node.js 24.
npm 11's `npm ci` rewrites the npm 6 lockfile, so regenerate it with npm 11. No package versions change.
Set `legacy-peer-deps = true` in `.npmrc` so npm 11 resolves peer dependencies as npm 6 did.

Test using WordPress Playground

The changes in this pull request can previewed and tested using a WordPress Playground instance.

WordPress Playground is an experimental project that creates a full WordPress instance entirely within the browser.

Some things to be aware of

  • All changes will be lost when closing a tab with a Playground instance.
  • All changes will be lost when refreshing the page.
  • A fresh instance is created each time the link below is clicked.
  • Every time this pull request is updated, a new ZIP file containing all changes is created. If changes are not reflected in the Playground instance,
it's possible that the most recent build failed, or has not completed. Check the list of workflow runs to be sure.

For more details about these limitations and more, check out the Limitations page in the WordPress Playground documentation.
