Conditional codec resolution grunt/esbuild/build.js, webpack.config.js, packages/core-impl/package.json, packages/core-impl/side/types/*, packages/core-impl/src/platform/... |
Build configurations add the ably-msgpack-plugin condition for device bundles. Core package exports and platform entry points resolve either the bundled codec or a null codec. CDN builds omit the condition and retain MessagePack. |
Public plugin and client configuration packages/device/package.json, packages/device/src/msgpack.ts, packages/device/msgpack/*, packages/core-impl/side/msgpack-exports.ts, packages/core/types.d.ts, packages/core-impl/src/common/lib/client/*, packages/core-impl/src/common/lib/util/utils.ts |
The device package exports MsgPack. Client constructors accept an unset built-in codec, and missing-plugin guidance names the device subpath. |
Protocol option validation packages/core-impl/src/common/lib/util/defaults.ts, packages/core-impl/test/rest/defaults.test.js, packages/core-impl/test/browser/modular.test.js, packages/core/modular.d.ts |
When useBinaryProtocol is true and MsgPack is absent, client construction throws ErrorInfo code 40019. Tests check this error and the JSON behavior when the option is false or omitted. |
Platform behavior and usage guidance packages/core-impl/test/unit/pubsub_device_msgpack.test.js, packages/core-impl/test/package/browser/template/src/index-pubsub-side.ts, packages/device/README.md, packages/device/index.d.ts, docs/migration-guides/v3/lib.md, packages/device/msgpack/index.d.ts |
Tests cover browser and Node.js device behavior, plugin encoding, and server MessagePack defaults. Documentation describes plugin use and protocol defaults by platform. |

quick comment ahead of review:
But the current implementation and commit msg show that node.js device bundle keeps MessagePack. And
But for bundles without a plugin, it will throw if Would like the PR description to reflect the latest state, and I think a simple table showcasing the current state of the plugin would be most beneficial - all types of bundles we provide (web, react, node.js, /debug etc) and the state of the MessagePack plugin for that bundle, maybe useBinaryProtocol default value as well if that differes between bundles |

useBinaryProtocol default for server would be true for node.js and false for web environments?
The web and React Native bundles of @ably/pubsub-device (root and /debug alike) and its CDN bundle no longer bundle a MessagePack codec. Their clients use JSON unless given the new MsgPack plugin in ClientOptions.plugins: from @ably/pubsub-device/msgpack on npm, or as AblyMsgPackPlugin.MsgPack from the new msgpack.umd.js on the CDN. JSON was already the default there, so this only changes clients that opted in to the binary protocol. The package's Node.js bundles keep MessagePack and still use it by default, as does @ably/pubsub-server. A client with no codec, from those bundles or from the modular variant, now throws ErrorInfo 40019 when constructed with useBinaryProtocol explicitly set to true, rather than silently falling back to JSON. The device bundles strip the logs that would otherwise reveal the downgrade. Leaving the option unset or false still selects JSON. The platform entry points now import their codec through @ably/pubsub-core-impl/bundled-msgpack, which resolves to no codec under the ably-exclude-msgpack export condition. The web and React Native builds of the device package, and its CDN builds, resolve with that condition. The Node.js entry point imports its codec directly, and @ably/pubsub-server and the internal test bundles build without the condition. The /msgpack subpath serves the Node.js codec under the node condition and the web codec otherwise. The default client classes no longer require a bundled codec, the MsgPack plugin is declared on CorePlugins, and the missing-plugin remediation for MsgPack names the new subpath. The web-bundle protocol checks live in the npm package browser test, which resolves the package through its browser export conditions in a real browser. The Node.js unit test covers the Node.js bundles and the server package only, since loading a web bundle under Node.js depends on browser globals that Node.js 16 to 20 lack. What
MessagePack is now a plugin for the browser and React Native clients of
@ably/pubsub-device, on npm and on the CDN. Those bundles no longer include a codec. To use the binary protocol there, pass the newMsgPackplugin:On the CDN, load
msgpack.umd.min.jsalongsideably.min.jsand passplugins: { MsgPack: AblyMsgPackPlugin.MsgPack }.useBinaryProtocoldefaultuseBinaryProtocol: truewithout the plugin@ably/pubsub-device, web (dist/index.*)false@ably/pubsub-device/debug, webfalse@ably/pubsub-device, React Native (root and/debug)false@ably/pubsub-device, Node.js (root and/debug)true@ably/pubsub-device/modularfalseably.js/ably.min.jsfalsemsgpack.umd.js/msgpack.umd.min.js(new)AblyMsgPackPlugin.MsgPack@ably/pubsub-server(web and Node.js)trueon Node.js,falseon the webWith the plugin,
useBinaryProtocolchooses the protocol as before and keeps the platform default. On the web the default isfalse, so you still have to setuseBinaryProtocol: true. Passing the plugin to a client that already includes MessagePack is harmless, so code shared between Node.js and the web can pass it everywhere.Behaviour change: JSON was already the default on the web and React Native, so only clients that set
useBinaryProtocol: trueare affected. They now throwErrorInfo40019 at construction until they get the plugin. Before, they used MessagePack. A modular client without the plugin used to fall back to JSON silently, and now throws too. A device bundle strips the logs that would have explained that fallback, so the client now throws instead. This is covered in the v3 migration guide under its own heading. How
@ably/pubsub-core-impl/bundled-msgpack. Under the custom export conditionably-exclude-msgpack, that subpath resolves tonull(src/platform/no-msgpack.ts). Otherwise it resolves to the web codec.@ably/msgpack-jsdirectly, so every Node.js build keeps MessagePack, whatever the condition says.@ably/pubsub-serverand the internal test bundles don't.@ably/pubsub-device/msgpackbundles@ably/pubsub-core-impl/msgpack, which the condition doesn't affect. It serves the Node.js codec undernodeand the web codec everywhere else. The CDN'smsgpack.umd.jsis the same entry point, built as a UMD plugin likepush.umd.jsandliveobjects.umd.js, andscripts/cdn_deploy.jsuploads it.normaliseOptionsthrows 40019 when no codec is available anduseBinaryProtocolis explicitlytrue. Unset orfalsestill selects JSON. The remediation names both the npm subpath and the CDN plugin.DefaultPubSubRealtimeClientandDefaultPubSubHttpClientno longer require a bundled codec. AMsgPackpassed inpluginsoverrides the bundled one, as any other plugin does.CorePlugins.MsgPackis declared and documented. TheuseBinaryProtocoldocs describe the device behaviour, and the missing-plugin remediation forMsgPacknames the new subpath.Size
The device web root (
dist/index.js) drops from 366 KB to 351 KB, measured by building the same config with and without the condition. Bundling the CDN entry with esbuild, without the UMD wrapper, gives 421 KB without the condition and 405 KB with it. The web plugin is about 17 KB and the Node.js one about 23 KB. All figures are unminified.Testing
test/unit/pubsub_device_msgpack.test.js(Node.js) checks that the device root and/debugNode.js bundles use MessagePack with or without the plugin. It also checks that the plugin's encode/decode round-trips, and that@ably/pubsub-serverclients default to MessagePack.test/package/browser/template/src/index-pubsub-side.ts) resolves the package through its browser export conditions in a real browser. For the root and/debugit checks JSON without the plugin, MessagePack with the plugin anduseBinaryProtocol: true, and the 40019 throw without the plugin./debugor React Native bundle contains the codec. It's still in the device Node.js bundles, the server bundles, the modular bundle (as its tree-shakable export) and the internal test bundles. A resolution check of the CDN entry showsably.jsresolving tono-msgpack.tsunder the condition, andmsgpack.umd.jscarrying the web codec.npm run check:packages, impltsc --noEmit, ESLint and Prettier pass on the latest revision. The full build and the test suites last passed on the previous revision. The latest revision only adds the CDN plugin and the condition rename.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
