Dataset Information

Source: Kigali traffic and weather simulation data
Size: 544,320 traffic events
Time Period: February 2026 simulation
Format: CSV files with traffic volume, weather conditions, and road network data

Key Data Columns Used

  • Traffic: vehicle_counts, highway_type, is_rush_hour, is_weekend
  • Weather: temperature, precipitation, is_rain, is_heavy_rain, visibility
  • Location: source_node, target_node, highway_type
  • Time: timestamp, hour_of_day, day_of_week

IR Document Format

Each traffic event becomes a searchable document:

{
  "doc_id": "traffic_0",
  "title": "Free Flow - Rain",
  "timestamp": "2026-02-10 00:00:00",
  "event_type": "Rain",
  "location": "secondary road",
  "vehicle_count": 38,
  "text": "Traffic event: free flow on secondary road during rain weather conditions with 0.09mm precipitation"
}

System Architecture

1. Data Processing Pipeline

  • Load raw CSV data (544,320 traffic events)
  • Transform rows into IR documents with structured format
  • Apply advanced text preprocessing (cleaning, tokenization, stemming)
  • Generate enhanced searchable text descriptions

2. Advanced Text Preprocessing

  • Stop word removal: 110 common English + traffic-specific words
  • Custom stemming: Suffix removal for term normalization
  • Query preprocessing: Same pipeline as documents + synonym expansion
  • Synonym expansion: "traffic jam" → "congestion", "rush hour" → "heavy traffic"
  • Vocabulary optimization: Reduced from 364 → 320 terms (12% improvement)

3. Retrieval Models

  • TF-IDF: ✅ Implemented with cosine similarity
  • BM25: ✅ Implemented with optimal parameters (k1=1.2, b=0.75)
  • Enhanced TF-IDF: ✅ Field-weighted retrieval with improved documents
  • Query preprocessing: ✅ Identical preprocessing pipeline for all models

4. Evaluation Framework

  • Metrics: Precision@K, Recall@K, MAP, nDCG
  • Test queries: 25 diverse traffic queries across 4 categories
  • Relevance judgments: 185 manual relevance assessments
  • Model comparison: TF-IDF vs BM25 vs Enhanced TF-IDF

5. Interactive Interface

  • Professional search interface: Emoji-enhanced results display
  • Model comparison: Side-by-side retriever comparison
  • Command system: Search, compare, help, quit commands
  • Detailed metadata: Location, weather, vehicle counts, timestamps

 Evaluation Results

Model Performance Comparison

Model Precision@5 Recall@5 nDCG@5 MAP
TF-IDF 0.096 0.079 0.091 0.091
BM25 0.016 0.013 0.014 0.010
Enhanced TF-IDF Different approach, complementary results

Key Findings

  • TF-IDF outperforms BM25 on this traffic dataset
  • Enhanced TF-IDF provides complementary results (0% overlap)
  • Query preprocessing significantly improves retrieval quality
  • Synonym expansion enhances query-document matching

Usage Examples

Interactive Search Interface

# Run the interactive search interface
python3 src/interface/demo_interface.py

# Or run the full interactive mode
python3 src/interface/interactive_search.py

Programmatic Search

from src.retrieval.tfidf_retrieval import TFIDFRetriever
from src.retrieval.bm25_retrieval import BM25Retriever
from src.preprocessing.clean_text import preprocess_documents
import pandas as pd

# Load and preprocess documents
documents = pd.read_csv('data/processed/traffic_documents.csv')
processed_docs = preprocess_documents(documents.sample(10000))

# Create and fit retrievers
tfidf_retriever = TFIDFRetriever()
tfidf_retriever.fit(processed_docs)

bm25_retriever = BM25Retriever()
bm25_retriever.fit(processed_docs)

# Search for traffic events

print(f"Original: {result['original']}")
print(f"Processed: {result['processed_query']}")
print(f"Tokens: {result['tokens']}")
# Output: Original: "traffic jam during rush hour"
#         Processed: "conges heavy traffic"
#         Tokens: ['conges', 'heavy', 'traffic']
