Brings this repo in line with datajoint-python and the codec family. dj-figpack-codecs and dj-canvasxpress-codecs were already Apache-2.0; this repo and dj-photon-codecs were the MIT outliers, with no rule behind the split.

Why Apache-2.0: the explicit patent grant. MIT is silent on patents, and that silence is what pharma legal review asks about a new dependency. Answering it in the license is cheaper than answering it per customer.

On authority, worth stating because this repo is the one where it is not obvious. Commits split 19 / 8 / 1 — Davis Vann Bennett authored the majority, not the copyright holder. Those contributions were work for hire for DataJoint under direction, so copyright is DataJoint Inc.'s throughout, which is what the existing MIT notice already asserted. No outside consent is outstanding. (MIT grants sublicensing rights independently, but the work-for-hire position is the cleaner basis.)

Copyright is preserved, not dropped. The Apache appendix carries Copyright 2026 DataJoint Inc. after the terms, matching the MIT notice it replaces.

Changed: LICENSE, the pyproject.toml license field, and the README license line. No OSI classifier was present to update.

Companion PR: dj-photon-codecs#1.

Aligns with datajoint-python and the codec family. dj-figpack-codecs and
dj-canvasxpress-codecs were already Apache-2.0; this repo and dj-photon-codecs were the
MIT outliers with no rule behind the split.

Apache-2.0 for the patent grant. MIT is silent on patents, which is the question pharma
legal review asks of a new dependency, and answering it in the license is cheaper than
answering it per customer.

On authority, since this repo has two contributors and the majority of commits are not
the copyright holder's own: Davis Vann Bennett authored 19 of 28 commits, as work for
hire for DataJoint under direction. Copyright is therefore DataJoint Inc.'s throughout,
which is what the existing MIT notice already asserted, and the relicense needs no
outside consent. MIT also grants sublicensing rights independently.

Copyright attribution is preserved: the Apache appendix carries "Copyright 2026
DataJoint Inc." after the terms, matching the MIT notice it replaces.

Changed: LICENSE, the pyproject license field, and the README license line. No OSI
classifier was present to update.
