What changed

  • release.yml runs daily at 10:17 UTC (cron: '17 10 * * *') and on workflow_dispatch; the push trigger is gone, so a merge no longer publishes by itself. Two dispatch inputs, both default false: force (skip the releasable-changes check; the release job still decides the version) and dry_run (run the check, the suite, the decision, the build and npm pack --dry-run, then stop before any publish, tag or GitHub release).
  • New first job, Releasable changes: runs scripts/release-version.mjs with git and Node alone (nothing installed). Releasable when the decision would publish a version or make a missing GitHub release. Otherwise the run ends green there; the reason goes to the log and the run summary.
  • When releasable, the suite job calls ci.yml through a new workflow_call trigger (CODECOV_TOKEN passed), so the whole suite runs on master with coverage uploaded to Codecov, which keeps the coverage badge current. The publish job runs only after it passes and publishes as before: the same decision, trusted publishing with provenance, the NPM_TOKEN fallback, the GitHub release and the repair of a missing one. The explicit test step in the publish job is dropped since the suite ran (npm publish still runs the tests through prepublishOnly).
  • Write permissions moved from the workflow to the publish job; the workflow default is contents: read. The serializing release concurrency group (queue: max, never cancelled) is unchanged.
  • ci.yml: a push to master runs a new quick job alone (lint, type check, vitest run --changed <before>). Pull requests run build, postgres18 and browser as before, so the required checks build and browser keep their source. A called run sees the caller's event, so the whole suite runs from the release workflow.

Docs

RELEASING.md, README.md (CI, Releases, and Badges) and CONTRIBUTING.md say a release runs daily at 10:17 UTC when releasable changes merged, and how to start one now: gh workflow run release.yml --ref master (with -f dry_run=true to stop before the publish). The comments in scripts/release-version.mjs match.

Tests

This pull request's CI runs the whole suite, including tests/releaseVersion.spec.ts. After the merge a dry_run dispatch on master shows the gate's decision and, when releasable, the suite passing with the publish skipped.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Workflow Updates

    • Pushes to the main branch now run a quicker set of checks; pull requests and release runs continue to run the full CI suite.
    • Releases are scheduled daily instead of running on every push. Manual runs can force a release check or use a dry run to preview the outcome without publishing.
  • Documentation

    • Updated project guidance to reflect the revised checks, release schedule, and manual release options.

The release workflow runs on a schedule and by hand, no longer on every
push to master. A first job runs the release decision with git and Node
alone and ends the run green when nothing is releasable. When something
is, the run calls ci.yml for the whole suite with coverage, then
publishes as before. Inputs force and dry_run on a manual run.

A push to master runs a quick job alone (lint, type check, the tests the
push changed); pull requests run the whole suite as before.

Walkthrough

The CI workflow now uses quick checks for pushes and the full suite for other events. Releases run on a daily schedule or by manual dispatch, pass through a releasability gate and full CI suite, and support dry runs before publishing.

Release schedule, gate, and suite
.github/workflows/release.yml, CONTRIBUTING.md, RELEASING.md
The release workflow adds daily and manual triggers, checks releasability on master, and runs the reusable CI suite when eligible. The release guidance describes the schedule and manual-run inputs.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "ci: release daily at 10:17 UTC when master holds releasable changes" matches the main change: release.yml moves from push-triggered to a daily 10:17 UTC schedule, gated on releasable changes on master. It is a short, single, conventional-commit-style sentence. It does not cover the ci.yml quick-job split, the force/dry_run inputs, or the permission changes, but that is expected for a title.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections. It has a What changed section that explains the release.yml schedule, the force and dry_run inputs, the new releasable-changes gate, the suite and publish jobs, and the ci.yml quick job. It has an Issue section that reads 'No issue', a Spec, plan and design section that reads 'None', and a Pictures section that reads 'None'. Tests are described, and the Docs section lists the documentation updates. The checklist from the template is not present. The 'Summary' heading from the template is replaced by 'What changed', and the 'Related' section is written as 'Issue'. The description also says the test validation after merge is still a plan, which is accurate. Overall the description is mostly complete, with minor gaps in template conformance.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 1 files. High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Keep full CI on master pushes
  • ➕ Provides immediate full-suite feedback and more frequent coverage uploads after merges.
  • ➖ Repeats expensive checks across merges and does not guarantee that the release's selected commit passed the full suite.

Recommendation: Keep the gated, reusable CI approach: it tests the release commit before publishing while avoiding full-suite runs on every merge. The publish-time decision remains important because master can advance during CI.

Remediation recommended

1. Workflow changes go untested after merge ✓ Resolved
Description
The new quick job runs only Vitest’s changed tests with --passWithNoTests, omitting the separate
Node tests that validate workflow changes. When a push changes only workflow files or their support
scripts, the quick job can pass without those tests, and the daily release gate does not run the
full suite because those files are not releasable package changes.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Gate the publish job on the suite result and on gate running.

When gate reports releasable=false, suite is skipped. Without an explicit condition, publish is then skipped too, which is the desired result. Make that explicit. A needs job that is skipped skips its dependents by default, but a future edit that adds always() would break this. Also, the former github.ref == 'refs/heads/master' condition is gone from publish. Today gate does the master filtering. A non-master run skips gate, so suite and publish skip as well. Add an explicit condition so the guarantee does not rely on skip propagation.

Proposed fix

   publish:
     needs: [gate, suite]
+    if: github.ref == 'refs/heads/master' && needs.gate.outputs.releasable == 'true' && needs.suite.result == 'success'
     runs-on: ubuntu-latest

… push base is missing, and gate publish on the suite explicitly

Review notes, answered in 7792caf:

  • Qodo, "Workflow changes go untested after merge": fixed. The quick job on a master push now runs node --test .github/scripts/check-workflow-pushes.test.mjs and the workflow-push check (seconds, no install), so a push that changes only the workflows is checked even when the daily release finds nothing releasable. Pull requests still run the whole suite.
  • CodeRabbit, publish gated on the suite: done. The publish job states if: needs.gate.outputs.releasable == 'true' && needs.suite.result == 'success' rather than relying on the default skip.
  • CodeRabbit, push base missing: fixed (every test runs when the commit before the push is not in the history).

A second Codex read found that the quick job's changed-test run kept vitest.config.ts's coverage thresholds over all of src/, so a push touching only the release script and its spec could fail on coverage. Fixed in 771853b: the quick job runs with coverage off; the release run's whole suite collects it.
