Repro Steps

If the issue only reproduces with specific workspace contents (e.g. a pyproject.toml, .venv, environment.yml, Pipfile, poetry.lock, .python-version), please share a minimal example or describe the layout.

Expected behavior

No error dialog

Actual behavior

Error dialog that steals focus and prevents further interaction with VSCode until dismissed. The error is bogus because shortly afterwards it finds the conda environment from the last session.
