Deep scan fixes: recipient list folder line, bounded reads, profile-aware re-encrypt - #2075
Fixes from the newest CodeRabbit deep scan (22 findings, export of 2026-10-27). Every finding was checked against current main; each new test was mutation-checked (it fails with the fix reverted).

Walkthrough
This pull request updates profile-sensitive recipient and decrypt handling. It adds folder-path and signature-file checks, bounds several input types, and changes repository validation scripts. Tests cover rejection cases, limits, and stale-result behavior.
Changes: Profile-sensitive operations
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Profile settings and recipient selection src/usersdialog.*, src/configdialog.cpp, src/imitatepass.*, src/mainwindow.cpp, CHANGELOG.md
The recipient dialog can start with no recipients selected. Re-encryption receives current profile settings and applies them when no run is active.
Decrypt result selection checks src/mainwindow.cpp, tests/auto/mainwindow/tst_mainwindow.cpp, CHANGELOG.md
Decrypt results for a nonempty file are discarded if the file differs from the currently shown file, including after deselection.
Store-relative folder paths containing control characters are rejected. The failure message also covers folder names with control characters.
Signature file checks and verification tests src/gpgidsigner.*, tests/auto/gpgidsigner/tst_gpgidsigner.cpp, tests/auto/imitatepass/tst_imitatepass.cpp
Verification refuses missing, non-regular, and oversized signature files before invoking GPG. Tests use temporary signature files and cover the refusal cases.
TOTP configurations over 4096 characters are rejected, search previews are limited to 200 characters, and key-generation values reject CR, LF, or NUL. Tests cover the limits and rejection cases.
Regular-file handling for key import src/importkeydialog.cpp, tests/auto/importkeydialog/tst_importkeydialog.cpp
Key import resolves the selected path and opens it with the regular-file helper. A POSIX test checks that selecting a FIFO returns promptly with a warning.
The audit checks the characters immediately around each Latin-letter run.
Skill link and frontmatter checks scripts/check_skill_sanity.py, scripts/test_check_skill_sanity.py, .github/workflows/skill-sanity.yml
The link scanner extracts Markdown destinations, and frontmatter parsing rejects YAML aliases. Tests exercise both checks, and the workflow runs the checker tests.
IJHack/QtPass#2077: The pull request hardens signature-file verification in the signed recipient-list flow, while the issue identifies further RealPass enforcement work.
IJHack/QtPass#2050: Folder-path and signed-list changes concern recipient-list integrity, while store-identity binding remains unresolved.
IJHack/QtPass#2071: The pull request handles late decrypt results and refreshes profile settings for re-encryption, but does not cover every queued operation.
Possibly related PRs
IJHack/QtPass#2060: This PR constrains Markdown link parsing; the current changes replace that parser with link_targets and add malformed-input tests.

Explanation
The title names three of the main changes: the recipient list folder line fix, bounded reads, and profile-aware re-encryption. The objectives and file summaries confirm all three. The title is a single sentence and does not list files. It omits other changes, such as the TOTP length limit, the grep preview window, and the skill-sanity link and frontmatter fixes, but the title does not need to cover every detail. The phrase "Deep scan fixes" is somewhat generic, but the rest of the title is specific.

If config contains more than 4096 characters of surrounding whitespace, trimmed.size() can remain within the limit. Totp::parse() can then accept an oversized configuration and scan it during trimming. Check config.size() before calling trimmed(). Keep the empty-value check after trimming.

const QString trimmed = config.trimmed();
- if (trimmed.isEmpty() || trimmed.size() > MAX_CONFIG_LENGTH) {+ if (trimmed.isEmpty()) {

From the CodeRabbit deep scan of f5d21f8:
- #5: a new profile's recipients dialog preselects nothing
(UsersDialog::Preselect::Nothing): needsInit() found no list, and one
appearing meanwhile was read under the active profile's signing policy.
- #9: ImitatePass re-encrypts also when pass is the active backend, and
then kept the settings of the profile it last ran for. Re-encryption
takes the current settings (when no run is active).
- #6: a decrypt arriving after the selection was cleared (deselect, a
profile switch) no longer repaints the panel.

From the CodeRabbit deep scan of f5d21f8:
- #1 Totp::parse() refuses a configuration over MAX_CONFIG_LENGTH (4096)
before QUrl/QUrlQuery turn it into millions of items.
- #4 KeygenDialog refuses a name or passphrase with CR, LF or NUL: the
batch is line-oriented, so each would start a directive of its own.
- #7 NativeGrep keeps at most kMaxPreviewLength (200) characters of a
matching line.
- #14 GpgIdSigner::verify() gives gpg the .gpg-id.sig path only when it
is a regular file of at most kMaxSignatureBytes (a FIFO blocked gpg and
the GUI thread).
- #17 ImportKeyDialog opens the picked file's target as a regular file
without blocking (Util::openRegularFile on the canonical path).
- #11 check_skill_sanity: a link title starts with a non-blank, so no
overlap with the separator; #15 YAML aliases in frontmatter refused
before construction.
- #20 audit_ts: maximal Latin runs found once, neighbours checked
directly, instead of a lookahead rescanning every suffix.
Tests that relied on a fake gpg ignoring a missing .gpg-id.sig now have
one; the WSL path test uses a real file.

From the CodeRabbit deep scan (#18): GpgIdGeneration::header() wrote the
store-relative folder as one line. A folder named "x\nKEYID" ended that
line, and KEYID was then parsed, and signed, as a recipient.
folderOf() now returns nothing for such a folder, so ImitatePass refuses
to write the list (and the read side, which compares against folderOf(),
does not accept one either).

- The long-line grep stand-in used `head -c`, which OpenBSD's head does
not have; it printed only "hit". dd makes the 100000 bytes everywhere.
- fuzz_totp found that toUri() of a configuration near MAX_CONFIG_LENGTH
percent-encodes past it, and parse() then refuses the URI. toUri() is
not used to write entries; the harness skips the round-trip for such a
URI, and toUri() documents it.
- check_skill_sanity: the alias refusal raises a YAMLError inside the
try, one return fewer (pylint R0911).

- check_skill_sanity: link destinations are found by one pass per line
(next ")" and ">", run ends and last non-blank looked up), not by a
regular expression that rescanned the rest of the line from every link
start: 20000 unclosed starts on one line took over a minute, and runs
of "[a](" or "[a](x" were quadratic too. Same results as the old
pattern on every skill file and on 1.3 million random lines; tests for
the repeated-start shapes added. Slices written so black and ruff agree.
- Totp::parse() checks the length before trimming: padding counted
for nothing, so an oversized value got copied and scanned.
- tst_mainwindow: the refused-show test drains its first click's decrypt
(start and failure) before the leftover goes up, so the final check can
only pass through the refusal clearing the panel.

CodeRabbit's outside-diff point on src/totp.cpp:115 (check the length before trimming) was valid. Fixed in e4c4c0f: parse() now refuses config.size() > MAX_CONFIG_LENGTH before trimmed(), and still refuses an empty value after trimming. The new parseRejectsBadInput row "valid secret padded past MAX_CONFIG_LENGTH" fails if the check is made on the trimmed value. The doc now says whitespace counts.
The tables were made on the first link start and held as None before,
which mypy (super-linter) rejects as indexing an Optional. A line without
"](" holds no link and is skipped; any other line gets its tables once.
Same results as before on 300000 random lines.

Skipping the blanks after a destination was still a loop, and every link
start whose run ends at the same blank run walked it again: "[a](x" *
20000 followed by 100000 blanks took 79 s. The first non-blank at or
after each position is now a table, like the others (_Tables), so each
link start costs O(1). Same results as before on every skill file and

Review of e6f7bbe, commit by commit (rebased onto main; git range-diff shows the five earlier commits unchanged).
f601236: preselect, re-encrypt profile, late decrypts: right
Preselect::Nothing for a new profile: needsInit() found no list, so a list that shows up after that is nobody's choice, and it would also have been read under the active profile's signing policy. The old constructor delegates with FromList, so every other caller is unchanged.
reencryptPath(dir, settings) takes the current settings only when no run is active, so a run that is going keeps its own profile. When ImitatePass is the active backend, this init() changes nothing (same settings).
passShowHandler: every Show() from the main window sets m_shownFile first (on_treeView_clicked, onOtp, Ctrl+C), so the stricter file != m_shownFile only drops results nobody asked the panel for: a cleared selection, and a decrypt from the edit dialog. ec2b055 then releases the interface for those, which closes the gap until the watchdog.
TOTP cap before QUrl/QUrlQuery, the .gpg-id.sig probe (regular file, ≤ 64 KiB, not blocking on a FIFO), and ImportKeyDialog on the canonical target through openRegularFile. Each closes what the scan found. The swap after the probe is out of scope per SECURITY.md, as the PR says.
isBatchValue() on name and passphrase. The email is matched by the anchored pattern. The batch template itself is the user's own text in the expert field, so that one rightly stays free.
yaml.parse() events for aliases: nothing is built before the refusal. Good.
folderOf() refuses a folder with a control character, and that works on the write side (addGenerationHeader) as well as the read side (compared against folderOf()), so it fails closed both ways. hasControl() is now the same rule as takeHeaderLine(), so what is written can always be read back. The tests make x\nEVE and x\rEVE for real.
dd instead of head -c (OpenBSD). The fuzz harness skips the round trip for a URI that percent-encoding takes over the cap, and ec2b055 makes normalize() refuse such a URI instead of storing an OTP that would never give a code. That's the right place to fix it.
KeygenDialog::replace() keeps a value with a line break out of the template, so fixing the field afterwards doesn't leave a pasted directive behind.
The link regex: blanks before ) are allowed again ([a](doc.md ) is a link), and because the title begins and ends with a non-blank, separator, title and trailing blanks never compete for the same characters. Per ](, that is linear.
The grep preview is taken around the match, with "…" where text was left out.
e4c4c0f: linear link scan, OTP length before trim, test drain: right
link_targets() looks things up instead of searching: the next ) and >, the end of each run and the last non-blank, each worked out once per line in one pass back or forth. So many unclosed ]( on one line cost no rescan per start, which also answers what I was going to raise about the regex's "linear over the file". Read against the old pattern, it keeps the same rules: an angle destination first, then a bare run ([^)\s]+); a title only after at least one blank, beginning and ending with a non-space and running up to the next ); only blanks before ); resume stops a [ inside a title from counting as a link of its own. The new tests cover the repeated-start shapes and images.
Totp::parse() checks the length before trimmed(), so padding no longer gets copied and scanned for nothing.
The test drains its click's own decrypt before the leftover goes up, so the last check can only pass through the refusal.
The tables are built once, for lines with ]( only (a link always has those next to each other), and the last loop, skipping blanks after the destination, is now a lookup too (skip), with the same result as the loop it replaces (skip[pos] == pos is "no blank"). Each link start now costs constant time; the 20000-starts-before-100000-blanks shape is in the tests.
Pedantic, non-blocking
t.mid(start, kMaxPreviewLength) can cut a surrogate pair at either end (an emoji, CJK Extension B), leaving a lone surrogate before or after the "…". If t[start] is a low surrogate, take start - 1; if the last kept character is a high surrogate, keep one more.
reencryptPath(dir, settings) calls init() on every re-encryption. With a configured GPG home that doesn't exist, init() shows its "does not exist" status message each time as well. That's harmless, and arguably right.
The 200-character window around a match could start or end inside a
surrogate pair (an emoji, CJK Extension B), leaving a lone surrogate next
to the "…". A window that starts on a low surrogate takes the high one
before it, and one that ends on a high surrogate takes the low one after.

* Content search preview: say code units, claim only surrogate pairs
CodeRabbit on #2081: kMaxPreviewLength counts UTF-16 code units, not
characters; what is kept whole is a surrogate pair, not every emoji (a
ZWJ sequence or a flag can still be cut between its code points), and
the CHANGELOG says so; the test also checks the expanded size
(kMaxPreviewLength + 4: one code unit and one "…" per edge).

* tst_util: the wide-line stand-in finds its file next to itself
CodeRabbit on #2081: the script quoted the temporary path in '...', which
a TMPDIR holding a quote breaks. It reads wide.txt from its own directory
now, so no path is written into it.
