Connecting Sonochan Mk.II

SMkII can be simply plugged into a PC. It's recognized as a standard USB Audio Class 1 device with name Sonochan mkII #XX, where XX is a logical number of the unit (default is 00).

Connecting SMkII to device under test (DUT) should be equally simple, just connect the ribbon cable to the SMkII's I2S Connector. Make sure the "Connector Power" indicator #13 is active by either proving external power supply from the DUT, or by bypassing the isolation using the Connector Power switch.

Configuring Sonochan Mk.II

Configuration is described in separate section.

Audio playback and recording

After configuration, SMkII can be used as any other Audio device. Using audio editor/application of your own choice, just choose SMkII from the list of available devices and start playback/recording. SMkII clock will be derived according to the configuration and the sample rate selected in the audio application.

Linux operation

For Linux, basic ALSA driver is sufficient for correct operation.

Windows operation

Long term problem on Windows is automatic resampling of the audio signal as it goes through Windows audio subsytem (MME, WindowsDirectSound). There is no suitable application to allow SMkII to work with WASAPI, therefore the only suitable way to avoid sample alteration by the OS is to use Steinberg's ASIO API.

There is no specific ASIO driver provided for SMkII, but as it is a standard USB Audio Class 1 (UAC1) device, a generic ASIO driver ASIO4ALL can be used without problems.

Naturally, only audio applications supporting ASIO API can then be used to utilize SMkII to it's full potential.

Multi-unit use with logical numbering

Several SMkIIs can be connected to the same PC to create a multi-channel measurement setup. In such setup, it's possible to run each SMkII with different configuration settings (e.g. one as I2S Master and second as I2S slave) but still in the same multi-channel audio editor.

To be able to distinguish between individual units for both configuration and also channel assignment in the audio editor, each unit must be assigned an unique number. This number can be assigned in the configuration tool.

It's expected that the initial assignment of id number will be done when only one SMkII is connected to the PC at a time.
